Field guide / DayZ on Windows

DayZ mods not downloading?

Start by identifying what is blocked: Steam’s download queue, a mod’s installed state, the server’s current mod list, or the links used to launch. Reinstalling everything is rarely a useful first diagnosis.

1. Check whether Steam is still working

Open Steam’s Downloads view and inspect the relevant Workshop task. A paused queue, a game update ahead of the mod, or insufficient disk space can prevent preparation from completing. Resume the intended download, finish required game updates and check the free space on the Workshop library drive.

Keep Steam online and signed in to the account that owns DayZ. Flarecall uses that local Steam client; it does not have a separate download service or a Steam login form. If Steam itself cannot download the item, restarting the launcher alone will not fix the underlying transfer.

Close DayZ before updating or repairing mods. If another launcher operation is active, let it finish or cancel it before retrying. Cancelling preparation in Flarecall does not necessarily cancel Steam’s own queued download, so check both places before starting again.

2. Separate missing, outdated and unverified items

Missing
The required item is absent from Flarecall’s installed inventory. Let Steam prepare it; a subscription alone is not a completed installation.
Outdated or downloading
Steam reports work still required or in progress. Wait for the queue to finish and verify again before joining.
Unverified
Flarecall cannot establish that the required mod state is ready. This is a reason to investigate or retry, not a claim that the item is definitely absent.
Ready
The item passed the available installation and Steam-state checks. Joining still requires a current server mod list and can fail for unrelated server or game reasons.

In Mods, use Verify with Steam to refresh the installed inventory. This differs from simply scanning for folders. Valve exposes separate installed, needs-update, downloading and download-pending states in GetItemState; a directory existing on disk is not sufficient evidence of readiness.

If you moved DayZ or use a custom Steam library, confirm the current game folder in Settings. A valid Workshop item can still be unusable if the launcher is looking at the wrong game location. Keep Steam and Flarecall under the same Windows user.

Flarecall’s Repair my mods action checks mod links and rescans the local installation. It is not a replacement for downloading missing Workshop content, and it cannot make an unavailable item available. After Steam has finished, verify the inventory again and reopen the target server.

Avoid deleting your whole Workshop folder as a first step: other DayZ servers may use those files, and large downloads may need to be repeated. Work from the exact item ID and error rather than only a display name, which an author can change.

4. Decide whether the server is the blocker

If Flarecall cannot verify the server’s current required mod list, joining stops before launch. Old cached information is not a safe substitute after a server changes its collection. Retry the live details; if other servers work but this one does not, share the server address and exact error with its administrator.

If a Workshop item has been removed or made unavailable, its server administrator needs to resolve the requirement. If DayZ starts but rejects the connection, read the in-game error. A version mismatch, password, capacity limit or server policy is not necessarily a download failure.

A missing server in Flarecall’s current preview list is another distinct case: discovery includes servers with players at discovery time and excludes empty servers. Absence from that list does not prove that a server or its mods have disappeared.

5. Retry once the cause has changed

  1. Finish Steam’s download or correct the game path.
  2. Run Verify with Steam in Mods and reopen the server details.
  3. Retry Join with DayZ closed and no other preparation operation active.
  4. Confirm the connection inside DayZ, not only the launcher’s process status.

If the problem persists, record your Windows version, Flarecall version, the exact error, the server address, affected Workshop IDs and whether Steam shows downloads in progress. Those details distinguish a reproducible launcher issue from a temporary server or Steam problem.

For broader Steam download failures, follow Steam’s official download troubleshooting guidance. Keep account and security protections enabled. For the full launcher sequence, return to joining a modded DayZ server. Launcher updates are separate from Workshop updates: see Settings → Updates for the preview update test.
